2022 – After joining the federal government at traffic lights, the Greens elect two new presidents. Social left-wing politician Ricarda Lang and foreign politician Realo Omid Nouripour are chosen as the new leadership duo at the online party conference.
1998 – In Washington, representatives of the governments of the 15 participating countries sign an agreement on the construction and operation of the International Space Station (ISS). Besides Germany, ten other European countries, the United States, Russia, Japan and Canada are participating in the largest peaceful space enterprise in the world.
1996 – The Venetian opera “La Fenice” is almost completely destroyed by fire.
1993 – The Bundespost publishes the five-digit postal codes which will apply from 1 July.
1955 – In the “German Manifesto” in Frankfurt’s Paulskirche, opposition politicians, trade unionists and theologians give top priority to the reunification of Germany over the formation of military blocs.
1938 – German chemist Paul Schlack discovers polyamide 6 and uses it to develop the tear and abrasion resistant textile fiber Perlon.
1930 – The German Reichstag passes an ignition monopoly law in exchange for a long-term government loan of 500 million Reichsmarks (about $125 million at the time) granted to the German Reich by the King of Matches Swedish, Ivar Kreuger. In the Federal Republic of Germany, the monopoly was not lifted until 1983.
1898 – The German Sports Authority for athletics is founded in Berlin. It is the precursor organization of the German Athletics Association e. V. (DLV).
1891 – Liliʻuokalani is proclaimed Queen of Hawaii after her brother’s death. She is the last regent on the throne of the Hawaiian Kingdom.
