Canadian GP live ticker: Aston Martin gives a lot of gas / Formula 1

Aston Martin star Fernando Alonso said: “We have some innovations on the car in Canada. That’s an understatement, as the greens feature new sidepods, a new floor and a new engine cover.

Aston Martin presses the accelerator: No other car will find as many new features on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve as on the car of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll – the AMR23 has received optimized side boxes, a new floor and a modified engine cover. It’s the biggest Evo step for Aston Martin this season.

Double Formula 1 champion Alonso says: “We have dared a new concept with the 2023 car, the new parts should help us to further develop the potential of the vehicle.”

The improved floor is said to help counteract the tendency to bounce, despite increased downforce. As a reminder, the rebound is an effect of modern winged cars, which are extremely sensitive to variations in ground clearance.

Due to instability, for example due to a bump like on the Montreal race track, the suction cup effect stops briefly, the car goes up, then the downforce builds up again, the car comes down again. This is repeated in quick succession. This effect is a combination of different factors. These are the finer points of mechanical tuning and aerodynamics.

The typical Aston Martin hollow on the upper side of the side nacelle has become deeper, the side nacelle itself is even more tapered. The engine cover features new vents to evacuate hot air from the engine compartment, as well as a serrated fin.

Fernando Alonso: “We will know more about the effects of the improvements during Friday’s free practice sessions.”

The Greens’ Evo schedule has been decent so far. Mike Krack, team boss: “So far everything we’ve put on the car has worked. There was not a single bad surprise with all the optimizations. On the circuit, the parts confirmed what we had hoped based on the findings in the wind tunnel.

Qualifying and the race will show if Aston Martin can put pressure on long-term winners Red Bull Racing. We keep you up to date with our popular live ticker. Of course, we also show below how colleagues from Sky, ServusTV and SRF are reporting from Montreal.
