Toronto (AP) – British pop star Sir Elton John honored Queen Elizabeth II at a concert in Toronto, Canada, for the “inspiring presence” in her life – and went on to sing one of his greatest success for her. The pop legend suspended the show at Rogers Center in front of tens of thousands of fans on Thursday following news of the monarch’s passing.
“She has guided the country through some of our greatest and darkest times with grace, grace and genuine warmth,” said John, who has close ties to the royal family and is known as ” sir” since the Queen knighted him in 1998. Elizabeth II was also Canada’s head of state.
He is happy that the queen is now “at peace”. She served the country for a long time and worked very hard. “We’re celebrating his life with music tonight,” John, 75, shouted to the cheering crowd, then began his hit song “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.”
The singer and pianist also provided a particularly poignant moment at Princess Diana’s funeral in 1997 and sang a rewritten version of her ballad “Candle In The Wind.”
Sting cried
Pop star Sting says she shed tears after the Queen’s death. “I cried quietly for the queen, I am sad for my country and what it has lost,” tweeted Sting (70).
Ex-Beatle Paul McCartney (80) posted a photo of the young queen on Twitter with the words: “God bless Queen Elizabeth II. May she rest in peace. Long live the King.”
