Caviezel was only able to get up after about ten minutes. A rescue helicopter eventually transported the Swiss, who was bleeding from the face. The race was interrupted for several minutes.

The Swiss ski team, the Swiss Ski Association, said on Twitter: “Mauro Caviezel has been taken to hospital in Canmore after his crash during the Super-G in Lake Louise. The team athlete will fly to Switzerland today, Monday, where further investigations will be conducted. An update will follow.”

For the Swiss, it was not the first serious accident of his alpine career. In 2021, Caviezel suffered a head injury during a training accident in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the consequences of which still concern him to this day. It wasn’t until Friday that the veteran contested his first World Cup race since the February 2021 World Cup.

Under an Instagram post from five days ago, in which Mauro Caviezel can be seen back in the starting house, many fans have already wished him a speedy recovery.

The race result became a minor matter in view of the serious crash. It was won by Mauro’s compatriot Marco Odermatt, who also has a good chance of winning the World Cup overall. Second was what is probably his biggest competitor for the big crystal ball: Norway’s Aleksander Aaamodt Kilde, third place went to Austrian Olympic champion Matthias Sayer.

The German Andreas Sender (33) also enjoyed great success. He made his first top 10 since December 2022 (PR rank 5) at the Lake Louise Super-G itself, breaking the national standard for February’s World Championships.

“It was a race full of attacks. Overall a great start to the Super-G season,” Sander said. Simon Jocher (14th), Romed Baumann (17th), Josef Ferstl (27th) and returnee Thomas Dreßen (31st) completed Germany’s overall satisfactory result. Luis Vogt retired after a pilot error.

The Super-G could have been the last race at Lake Louise. The organizers have been struggling with financial problems for a long time. The chances of returning to Lake Louise in the future are slim, FIS race director Markus Waldner said this weekend.
