Fires in the province of Alberta are destroying forests covering an area the size of the island of Majorca. Prime Minister Trudeau has pledged federal assistance.
More than a hundred forest fires continue to rage in Western Canada. According to authorities, the fires have spread over an area of about 400,000 hectares. This roughly corresponds to the area of the island of Majorca.
Now the affected province of Alberta wants to apply for federal aid. Premier Danielle Smith referenced a conversation with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He promised her that the Canadian army would be deployed. It’s about getting the working group and figuring out how best to fit it into existing teams.
Nearly 30,000 people have already had to leave their homes. Smith warned that the fires “could last for several months”. She had previously declared a state of emergency due to the “unprecedented” situation.
During this time at Fight against the flames the first successes are achieved. In the south of the province, there were isolated showers, the fire protection authority said. This allowed firefighters to reach some areas they had been unable to approach before due to the extreme fires
