The United States has not only sanctioned other Russian companies in the arms, energy and technology sectors: companies based in Kyrgyzstan or the United Arab Emirates are also affected.
Kyrgyz companies have often supplied Russia with technology subject to export controls since the start of the Russian invasion. These eventually served the war, the finance ministry said.
As a result of the sanctions, any assets of those affected will be blocked in the United States. U.S. citizens or persons located in the United States are prohibited from doing business with sanctioned companies and individuals. International business is also generally made much more difficult for those affected by the sanctions.
In Canada, Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly announced that the country is also imposing sanctions on more than 40 individuals and 25 organizations. The sanctions targeted those involved in the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the leaders of the Wagner Group.
Among them is top Wagnerian leader Ivan Maslow: he is held responsible for a massacre of civilians in Mali in March last year. The Malian government, which works with Wagner, had therefore ended its cooperation with the UN peacekeeping mission MINUSMA.
