16 forest fires are raging in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. Four fires in particular are worrying authorities as they continue to spread. One of the fires is believed to be the largest the eastern Canadian province has ever seen.

The smoke plumes also reached the US states of New York, Maine and Connecticut.

Forced evacuations were ordered in Shelburne, Nova Scotia, and a hospital also had to be evacuated as a precaution. In a short time, around 120 hectares of land around Shelburne was affected by the wildfire.

Tim Houston, Premier of Nova Scotia, has asked for help from the Canadian government. This has now been approved, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.

The army and the coast guard are deployed to help the firefighters do their job. Wind and drought make extinguishing difficult and spread flames easily.

The fires have been raging since early May. Thousands of hectares of land have already burned.
