Ski racers Aleksander Aamodt Kilde and Marco Odermatt are still in their own league in the speed disciplines. After the two won a race on the opening weekend in Lake Louise, the downhillworld Cup at Beaver Creek, the Norwegian again. On Saturday, Kilde was six hundredths ahead of his Swiss rival on the 2.7 kilometer long track. Third was James Crawford (+0.79) of Canada.
Romed Baumann finished sixth as the best starter in the German Ski Association and thus fulfilled the national World Cup standard. “The podium would have been possible, but I’m still happy,” said the 36-year-old after his “best result”. Extreme gusts of wind in the upper part of the route and light snowfall made conditions difficult on the dreaded “Birds of Prey”. The previous day’s departure had been canceled due to the weather.
Dominik Schwaiger (13th) can also predict the highlight of the season in France after his second top-15 result this winter. Josef Ferstl finished 14th; Andreas Sander (19th), returnee Thomas Dreßen (24th) and Luis Vogt (53rd) missed a first place. Simon Jocher was injured after his fall in training.
This Sunday, there is still a Super-G for the men in Colorado. “The tracks won’t grow excessively until then. But attack again, attack and keep fighting,” was Baumann’s goal for the race.
A week after the World Cup in Lake Louise, Canada, another men’s downhill race was canceled due to bad weather. As the organizers announced a few hours before the scheduled start on Friday, the race in Beaver Creek (USA) will not be able to take place due to high winds and snowfall. The jury and the organizers would have decided together. The track had been closed, the workers were preparing the route with caterpillars. A catch-up date was not initially mentioned.
The downhill race at Lake Louise had to be canceled last Friday due to heavy snowfall. The race was postponed the next day and a Super G was canceled with no replacement. Another downhill is scheduled for Saturday at Beaver Creek, as well as a Super G on Sunday.
Ski racer Simon Jocher suffered a concussion as well as a bruised lung and ribs in a training crash in Beaver Creek, USA. The sporty 26-year-old soldier from SC Garmisch is to take a “several weeks” break, as the German Ski Association announced on Thursday. Upper Bavaria will definitely be absent from the downhills and the Super-G this weekend. In mid-December in Val Gardena and shortly before New Year’s Eve in Bormio, there are two more race weekends this year for the fastest of alpine runners.
“Simon’s absence through injury is bittersweet for the whole team,” commented national coach Christian Schwaiger of DSV’s setback. Jocher crashed during the first downhill practice on Wednesday and spent the following night in a clinic. In the coming days, the Upper Bavarian is expected to return to Germany, where further medical examinations are pending.
Jocher, who is aiming to break into the top 20 this winter, had a good start to the season with a 17th place in the downhill and a 14th place in the super-G. The Schongauer has already reached half of the World Cup standard. After its failure, the German Ski Association team for races on the dreaded “Birds of Prey” track this weekend was reduced to six starters. Returnee Thomas Dreßen leads the men’s team.
