The road to silver at the world championships

A lot of pressure for the DEB team in the group stage

After three tight defeats in the opening of the group stage against favorites Sweden, Finland and the United States, Germany needed to win the last four remaining games to maintain their chance of reaching the quarter-finals. After a shaky 6-4 victory over Denmark, the national team won the next three games against Austria, Hungary and France and qualified fourth in the group to reach the last eight.

And again against Switzerland

In the quarter-finals of the World Cup, Switzerland awaited the DEB team, which played a solid preliminary round and had beaten Canada and the Czech Republic, among others. But like two years before, Switzerland lost to Germany in the quarter-finals. With a focused defensive performance throughout the match, the Germans pulled a dent in the Swiss and qualified for the World Cup semi-finals with a 3-1 win.

A historic World Cup semi-final against the United States

There they met the in-form Americans and it was to be a dramatic semi-final. After an early 2-0 lead for USA, Germany equalized in the first period through Fischbuch and Szuber. In the second period, USA went 3-2 and managed to maintain their narrow lead until shortly before the end. Mathias Niederberger came out of the gate, Germany played with the majority – and was rewarded in the last minute of the match. Marcel Noebels threw after Dominik Kahun worked hard in front of the American goal and the drive ended up with Noebels, who equalized.

In overtime, Freddie Tiffels came into its own: after a pass from Kahun, Tiffels went from the left, fooled two opponents with a short movement and finally put the puck in the long corner crossed at a sharp angle. A world-class goal from the native of Cologne, Germany made it to a World Cup final for the first time in 70 years.

Canada too strong in an equal final

The 2023 World Cup final in Tampere, Finland, pitted Germany against record world champions Canada. Those who thought the final would be a one-sided affair in favor of the Canadians were wrong: Germany took the lead twice through Peterka and Fischbuch and smelled the sensation. But the Canadians managed to equalize quickly after the first German goals. It was a balanced match until the last third, until Canada finally won with its individual class and a bit of luck and became ice hockey world champions for the 28th time.
