What is the extent of the winter sports program on television?
ARD and ZDF have nearly 400 hours of live reporting in their programs. The two public television channels take turns at the weekend, the pool of broadcasting companies begins this year and, after the first weekday biathlon races, will show the first continuous program this Saturday over almost six hours. The thematic channel Eurosport offers even more winter sports in its program.
When is the winter sports program on TV?
The first and second are usually broadcast on Saturdays and Sundays from early morning to late afternoon. This Saturday, the ARD starts at 8:55 a.m. and offers, among other things, biathlon, cross-country skiing, luge and bobsleigh. Until 3.15 p.m. there is winter sports in the first, it looks almost the same on Sundays. The World Cup Round of 16 starts at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. So, if you want, you can watch sports for more than twelve hours.
The second major winter sports weekend takes place on ZDF. Saturday in a week (December 10) the second will show World Cups on snow and ice from 10:10 a.m. to 3:20 p.m., at 4:00 p.m. a Qatar World Cup quarter-final will be launched. Sunday (11.12.) is in Qatar free play and winter sports without competition.
What is different this year?
There are some changes due to the FIFA World Cup in winter. Several winter sports have been relocated to avoid football. The first ski jump started earlier than usual, the discipline “largely avoided the World Cup with elegance”, as ARD program director Thomas Wehrle put it.
Some associations have postponed the competitions to the new year. The broadcasters have “already coordinated with the various associations over the long term in order to minimize overlaps”, explained Axel Balkausky, ARD sports coordinator. Public broadcasters also have more World Cups than otherwise on the internet alone.
What does Eurosport show?
Winter sports enthusiasts who do not like the public service offer or find it too small can turn to Eurosport. According to its own statements, the niche broadcaster has over 1,100 hours of programming across various platforms. For example, Saturday and Sunday late afternoon there will be downhill skiing at Beaver Creek and Lake Louise at Eurosport. The broadcaster, which is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, also relies on paid offers.
Which experts are on the microphone?
The ARD has a new duo of biathlon experts. Arnd Peiffer and Erik Lesser work for the former, Magdalena Neuner and Kati Wilhelm are no longer in action. The unchanged ZDF team includes Toni Innauer (ski jumping), Marco Büchel (alpine skiing), Sven Fischer and Laura Dahlmeier (biathlon).
Eurosport has the most experts on the mic, including Martin Schmitt, Werner Schuster (ski jumping), Michael Rösch (biathlon), Vicky Rebensburg (alpine skiing), Jochen Behle (cross-country skiing) and Hans-Peter Pohl (Nordic combined ) .
skier thin shines in the zigzag course: “A dream”
in the Czech Stangenwald ski ace Lena Dürr keeps track. With its second place, Upper Bavaria gives hope of a medal at the World Championships. Only gold it probably won’t. Lena Dürr more than deserved a firm hug from thief Mikaela Shiffrin after her best result of the season. A day when the speed gentlemen in Italy experienced its next debacle, Upper Bavaria once again had the German Ski Association applauded. The 31-year-old was beaming with pride after finishing second in the Spindlermühle slalom in the Czech Republic with winner Shiffrin.
At least now it’s clear: Dürr is to be expected at the world championships on February 6 in France begin. “I’m just happy. Second place is really good. The conditions were perfect, it was a dream until the end,” the SV Germering athlete told ZDF.
The fact that Dürr was self-critical even after two outstanding runs demonstrates the heightened demands of German medal hopefuls. “It wasn’t quite clean here and there,” complained the fourth Olympian after the World Cup. Especially in the first run, she left some time in the upper zone.
The preparation for the men’s season seems to be paying off. Dürr wanted to hone aggression from the get-go – and risk it. With success, because unlike in the past, the German now also attacks on the last lap. Two goals for the season are still open: the first victory in the World Cup and the crack of Shiffrin. But somehow, America’s standout athlete looks unbeatable this winter.
“For the very first, everything really has to fit. Mikaela can always go further,” praised Dürr for her competitor, four years her junior. Shiffrin celebrated her eleventh win of the season wherever she made her World Cup debut twelve years ago. The versatile n is only one victory away from Ingemar Stenmark’s absolute record for most World Cup successes. Already this Sunday, she can with the Swedish Draw the level with an alpine legend.
Along with slalom specialist Linus Straßer, Dürr is Germany’s only major hope for a medal at the upcoming world championships. In the absence of Thomas Dreßen, the German speedmen had their next debacle on Saturday in Italy. No starter among the top 20, only Andreas Sander (22nd) and Dominik Schwaiger (30th) in the points. Swiss high flyer Marco Odermatt took the win.
