Avian flu in Canada, the United States and England – fode.ca

In Canada, five new cases of highly contagious avian influenza (HPAI) were confirmed in commercial poultry farms between September 16 and 18, 2022. The first three outbreaks were reported in Alberta City. The other two outbreaks occurred in Manitoba and Ontario. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has not yet provided information on flock size and type of poultry farms.

The province of Alberta has recorded a total of 29 bird flu outbreaks this year, including seven in September. So far, 21 cases have been recorded in Ontario and three in Manitoba. Quebec, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Nova Scotia reported nine, eight, five and two cases respectively in 2022. Bird flu is also rampant in the United States. Cases have recently been confirmed in Minnesota, Ohio, California and Utah.

With the onset of autumn, cases of bird flu are also increasing again in England. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) reports that chickens on a farm near Clacton on Sea, Essex, were confirmed carriers of the highly pathogenic HPAI H5N1 virus on September 18. As is customary in Germany, a restricted area and a surveillance zone were set up around the farm and all animals in the herd were slaughtered.

The day before, there had also been an outbreak of bird flu on a farm in Suffolk. A total of 123 cases of highly contagious bird flu have been recorded in England since October 2021.
