Ice hockey, World Cup: USA beat Czech Republic, Canada beat Finland

With their eighth tournament victory, the United States reached the semi-finals of the World Cup against Germany. The double world champion beat the twelve-time defending champion the Czech Republic 3-0 (1-0, 1-0, 1-0) on Thursday May 25, 2023 and thus extended his series.

In the preliminary round, the United States defeated Germany 3-2 in the third game and remained undefeated at the top of the group. NHL players Matt Coronato (Calgary Flames) and Nick Perbix (Tampa Bay Lightning) and Cutter Gauthier (Boston College) scored against the Czech Republic in Tampere.

Latvia surprise against Sweden

The semi-final against Germany will again take place in Tampere on Saturday (5:20 p.m./ticker live on sportschau.de). The other semi-final (1:20 p.m.), which will also be played in Finland on Saturday, will be disputed by Canada, record world champions, and, surprisingly, co-hosts Latvia.

The Canadians beat defending champions Finland 4:1 (1:0, 1:0, 2:1), Latvia beat Sweden 3:1 (1:0, 0:1, 2:0) in Riga to reach the final of an ice hockey world championship for the first time.

Jack Quinn (Buffalo Sabres), Samuel Blais (St. Louis Blues), Michael Carcone (Arizona Coyotes) and Tyler Toffoli (Calgary Flames) scored for Canada, while only Teemu Haartkainen scored for Finland in Tampere.

Latvia’s acclaimed win came from Dans Lomelis, Schwenninger Wild Wings’ Miks Indrasis and Janis Jaks. Only Timothy Liljegren (Toronto Maple Leafs) scored for Sweden.
